The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection on Sunday penalised Grameenphone, the country’s leading mobile operator, Tk 2.50 lakh for deceiving clients through false advertisement about an internet package in 2015.
Shaheen Ara Momtaz, a deputy director of the DNCRP, imposed the penalty after conducting hearing on an allegation of false advertisement and breeching promise.
Officials of the DNCRP said that Abdullah Shiblee Sadik, an assistant director of parliament secretariat, lodged a complaint in October 2015 against GP saying that the operator deceived him through the false advertisement.
In the internet package titled ‘Darun Eid Offer’, the operator promised that a subscriber would get 2GB free internet if he bought 1GB at a cost of Tk 275 including VAT with validity for 28 days.
Once he subscribed the package, GP deducted Tk 325.74 and he got an SMS which said that the validity for the free 2GB internet was only seven days and the subscribers would have to enjoy the offer between 12:00am and 12:00pm.
In the advertisement, there were no such conditions, Shadik mentioned in his complaint.
Shaheen Ara, who is on deputation from the Anti-Corruption Commission, told New Age that the directorate found that GP violated the article 44 and 45 of the Consumers’ Right Protection Act-2009.
‘The operator was penalised Tk 2 lakh for false advertisement to attract clients and Tk 50,000 for not providing promised services,’ she said.
The representatives of GP at the hearing confessed the violations and promised in writing to pay the penalty within five working days, she said.
According to the act, the petitioner will get 25 per cent of the penalty money.
