The government has recently amended Trade Organisations Rules increasing the number of director posts of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries.

Now the number of directors is 80, which was 72 before amendment.

Commerce ministry officials said that they increased eight posts of directors as several chambers and business associations requested the ministry to increase the number of posts.

The commerce ministry has recently issued a notification, which has been published in the Bangladesh Gazette, amending the Trade Organisations Rules 1994 under section 23 of Trade Organisations Ordinance 1961.

The ministry has brought changes in the Section 22 of the rules to this end.

As per the new rules, out of 80 director posts 46 directors (23+23) would be elected from chamber group and association group and 34 directors would be nominated from 17 chambers and 17 associations.

Earlier, the numbers of elected directors were 42 and nominated directors were 30 from 15 specific chambers and 15 designated associations.

The commerce ministry has selected two more associations and two more chambers from which four directors would be nominated.

The two chambers are Rangpur Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Gopalganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry from which two directors would be nominated.

As per the amended rules, two more directors would be nominated from Exporters Association of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association.

Earlier, the government amended Trade Organisations Rules in July 2018 increasing the posts of directors to the FBCCI board to 72 from 60.

Ministry officials said that the government increased the number to accommodate new chambers and associations.
