Bangladesh Railway Shramik League leaders and activists on Sunday went on demonstration at Pakshey in Pabna in protest against promotion of 12 pointsmen to trains clerk post.
Shramik League activists also assaulted two officials of Bangladesh Railway’s Pakshey divisional transport office during their processions, rallies and besiege of the office of divisional railway manager of BR west zone.
They also issued an ultimatum to go for tougher movement if their demands, including retaking the departmental exams for promotions and removal of Pakshey divisional transportation officer Abdullah Al Mamun within seven days.
Abdullah Al Mamun said a group of BR Shramik League activists staged demonstration and laid siege to his office at about 12 noon on Sunday in his absence.
They assaulted assistant transportation officer Nasir Hyder and office assistant Masudul Karim, he said.
BR Pakshey divisional office has recently promoted 12 employees, including guards and gatemen, through a departmental up gradation test held on December 27, 2018.
DTO Abdullah Al Mamun said that the Sramik League activists forced railway not to hold up-gradation tests in last couple of years showing many excuses.
Due to the lack of promotions, new recruitments to lower grade posts were held up in recent years, he continued.
‘After 12 employees got promoted the leaders became angry,’ he said.
Railway Sramik League secretary Nazrul Islam brushed aside the allegation of assaulting railway employees.
He claimed that they staged a protest rally demanding removal of DTO and rejecting the recent promotion.
He explained that the railway officers arranged the promotional tests secretly although they had earlier requested them to hold the examinations after the December 30 general elections.
‘A total of 17 promotion seekers could not be able to appear in the examination while the DTO promoted the employees according to his own choice which made workers agitated,’ he said.
Nazmul Islam, Pakshey divisional railway manager, told New Age that they would investigate the incident and take action if anybody was found guilty.
