The Vietnamese Le Ngoc Drama Troupe will stage The Mistress of the Inn today at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as part of the 2nd Dhaka International Monodrama Festival, which began on Thursday.
The eight-day event, which will feature a total of 11 monodramas, has been organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and International Theatre Institute’s Bangladesh Chapter, with help from the ministry of cultural affairs.
The Mistress of the Inn has been written by Chua Soo Pong inspired by an Italian play of the same title.
The production seeks to provide a glimpse of the Vietnamese culture and history by combining different elements of Eastern and Western theatres with a distinctive Vietnamese flavour.
It shows a widow, Pham Thi Thanh Thuy, who inherits an inn from her late husband. Two boarders of the inn try to impress her but she does not respond to their attempts.
The drama, presented through Thanh Thuy’s monologue, takes a turn as a high-ranking army officer, Colonel Doan, arrives at the inn.
Doan does not pay attention to the widow, which makes her feel slighted, so she takes it upon herself to impress the colonel but fails eventually.
