Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said those who were cherishing an ambition to hold the next general election keeping Khaleda Zia, chairperson of the party, in jail were the real losers.
Khaleda Zia will definitely have to be freed from jail, as election excluding her would be an impossible dream of the
government, he said while addressing a discussion in Dhaka.
The secretary general came down hard on the chief election commissioner for his recent remark that the commission would not take any initiative to bring any political party to the forthcoming election.
‘The Election Commission is speaking in line with the government,’ he added.
He alleged that the incumbent Election Commission was formed for bringing Awami League again to power through holding a unilateral election.
Fakhrul also complained that the law enforcers had disobeyed Supreme Court instruction by arresting a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal from political programme of BNP on Thursday.
Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar), a component of BNP-led alliance, organised the discussion at National Press Club.
Presided over by its acting chairman TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury, it was addressed, among others, by JP secretary general Mostofa Zamal Haider, Jagpa president Rehana Pradhan and NAP secretary general Golam Mostofa Bhuiyan.
BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed, while addressing another programme in Dhaka on Friday, said the recent police attacks on the party’s programmes reflected that the government’s fall was ‘imminent’.
Moudud, also former law minister, said the whole nation was stunned at the police attacks on BNP’s peaceful programmes including sit-ins.
Bangladesh Youth Forum organised the function at the National Press Club demanding release of Khaleda Zia.
Moudud contradicted the government’s claim that prime minister had the right to seek vote, but he said, not as the prime minister.
Moudud said BNP would take part in next election.
