Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Md Siddiqur Rahman on Thursday urged intellectuals and civil society members to speak carefully about the minimum wage of readymade garments sector workers.
Some people raised their voice demanding Tk 16,000-18,000 as minimum wages which was completely impractical, he said while speaking at the green factory award giving ceremony held at BGMEA Apparel Club in the city.
‘There are some intellectuals who are involved with various researches on RMG sector workers minimum wages. I will request them to practice restraint while commenting on workers’ wages,’ Siddiq said.
He suggested all to practice restraint on the wages except for wage board members adding, ‘do not try to provoke workers rather the issue should be finalised within the wage board’.
‘We have formed wage board to review the wages of workers and the minimum wage would be finalised through board considering the needs of workers and strength of industry,’ the BGMEA president said.
Bangladesh was moving forward due to the loyalty of the readymade garment workers but provocation over wages might cause unrest, he said.
If any untoward situation took place in the sector due to provocation and unrealistic demands, the industry would be closed down or relocated from Bangladesh and 44 lakh workers of the sector would be the worst sufferers, Siddiq warned.
