Bangladesh shooting team, comprising eight players and two officials, will leave for Japan today to take part in the 10th Asian Airgun Championships, scheduled to be held in Wako City from December 6 to 12.
The championships will be held in two different categories — senior, junior and youth.
The youth category is the qualification round for Youth Olympics Games scheduled to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina next year.
Risalatul Islam, Rabibul Islam, Arnab Sharar, Syeda Atkia Hasan Dish and Synthia Naznin Tumpa will take part in air rifle events in three different categories.
South Asian Games gold medallist Shakil Ahmed, Anwar Hossain and Ardina Ferdous Akhi will play in pistol events.
Bangladeshi shooters earned two silver medals in team events of the youth category from last Asian Airgun Championships, held in Iran, Tehran in 2016.
This time they are also focusing on to do well in the individual events.
Bangladesh’s Danish coach Klavs Christensen is pinning his hopes in Rabibul Islam to produce good result in the junior category.
Christensen also backed Arnab to do well in the youth category to earn a place for the Youth Olympic Games.
‘He [Rabiul Islam] is a junior shooter, who is doing very well in 10-metre air rifle event and he has a good chance to qualify for the shoot-off round,’ said Christensen.
‘Arnab is also doing fine in youth category. He will have an opportunity to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games if he can produce good results in the youth category.’
Three best shooters will qualify for the Youth Olympics.
The coach is also optimistic about Syeda Atkia Hasan Disha, who along with Mahfuza Jannat Jui and Sharmin Akter bagged the silver medal in the women’s youth 10-metre air rifle team event in Iran.
