The leaders of Garments Sramik Odhikar Andolan, a combine of nine organisations of garment workers, demanded compensation for wounded garment worker Kanchan Mia undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The labour leaders raised the demand at a press conference at the central office of Ganosamhati Andolan at Hatirpool on Sunday.

Kanchan Mia was critically injured in police firing, while 20 workers of Creative Collection Limited were also injured, during demonstrations in demand of extended Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

He has undergone a major operation in his digestive system and he may need another operation as his doctors prescribed, said alliance coordinator Shahidul Islam Sabuj.

The eight-member family of Kanchan is facing financial crisis to provide treatment expenditures, Shaidul added.

‘We demand Tk 50 lakh compensation for Kanchan Mia according to the section 121 of ILO Convention and also treatment expenditures of other injured workers from the owners of the garment factory,’ Shahidul said.

They also demanded identification and punishments of the police personnel who opened fire on the workers.

Garment Sramik Samhati president Taslima Akther, garment labour leaders Prakash Datta, AAM Foyez Hossain, Shabnam Hafiz and others attended the press conference.
