Noakhali district Awami League general secretary and lawmaker for Noakhali-4 Ekramul Karim Chowdhury had termed the party general secretary Obaidul Quader a man from a Razakar family.
The AL lawmaker made the comment early Friday while he was speaking on Facebook live and by Thursday morning the video went viral.
Protesting against the remark, Obaidul Quader’s younger brother Abdul Quader Mirza, also a local Awami League leader and mayor-elect of Basurhat municipality, held a rally in Companigang of Noakhali from a rally and vowed to continue to demonstrate until lawmaker Ekramul Karim is ousted from the district AL committee.
At about 12:15am on Friday, Ekram from his Facebook ID had said, ‘If I talk, I would not speak against Mirza Quader, I will speak against Obaidul Quader. A man of a Razakar family had reached such a stage. And he cannot control his younger brother.’
Ekram in his 27-second live video had warned that he would speak more about the issue soon.
Ekramul again appeared on Facebook live twice on Thursday.
In one of the videos, he said that his remarks last night were against Quader Mirza, not against Obaidul Quader who is a freedom fighter.
In the other occasion, he asked the district AL leaders not to take any programme against him either at district or at upazila level.
On Friday afternoon, AL leaders and activists led by Abdul Quader Mirza brought out a procession in the Basurhat municipal area under Companiganj in Noakhali to protest against Ekramul’s remarks.
The protesters carried an effigy of Ekramul, burnt it and chanted slogans against the lawmaker.
Earlier, Quader Mirza, during his election campaign as the AL mayoral candidate for Basurhat municipality, had criticised AL lawmaker Ekramul.
The election was held on January 16.
