Ishrat Nishat’s 1st death anniversary today

Today is the 1st anniversary of death of theatre activist, director, light designer, playwright and recitation artiste Ishrat Nishat.

Theatre troupe Desh Natok will arrange a programme to commemorate the life and works of Nishat on Wednesday at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

The programme will feature discussion, songs, recitation and a play.

Thespians Ramendu Majumdar, Mamunur Rashid, Ataur Rahman, Nasiruddin Yousuff and BSA director general Liaquat Ali Lucky, among others, are scheduled to attend the programme.

Ishrat Nishat, the daughter of the late acclaimed actress Najma Anwar, was born on August 26, 1964.

Nishat began her theatrical journey with theatre troupe Aranyak Natyadal’s play Guinea Pig in 1980s.

She was a founder member of Desh Natok and served as the troupe’s leader till her death.

She acted in plays namely Tin Birosa Kabya, Ghorlapat, Darpane Sharatshashi and others. She also directed two plays namely Loha and Arakshita.

She was also a member of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, Bangladesh Path Natok Parishad and Sammilita Sangskritik Jote.

Nishat designed sets and lighting for a number of popular plays namely Kohe Facebook, Katha Kalin and others. She also designed sets for recitation troupe Baikuntha Abritti Academy.

She also acted in Nasiruddin Yousuff-directed film Alpha.

Ishrat Nishat passed away at the age of 56 in her sister’s residence in capital’s Gulshan at about 11:30pm on January 19.
