Chinese national stabbed to death in Pirojpur

A  Chinese national working for a bridge construction project was stabbed to death in Pirojpur district headquarters on Wednesday night.

The Chinese national, Pan Yuanjun, 56, was killed while he was riding a bicycle near the construction site. 

Police said they identified the person behind the killing, but did not disclose the identity of the offender.

Pan was a shutter maker and also looked after welfare of the labours working at the China-Bangladesh Bridge construction site since June 13, 2019 where 40 other Chinese and 50 Bangladeshis were working.

The incident occurred in the busy Bhekutiya ferry terminal area about 8:00pm near the bridge construction site.

Hayatul Islam Khan, superintendent of Pirojpur district police, said police were investigating the motive behind the killing as the witnesses were being interrogated over the incident.

The police investigators said they sent the body to the district hospital.

In December 2019, a 47-year-old Chinese businessman, Gao Jianhui, who used to supply stones for Padma Bridge project, was strangled to death and buried at the backyard of his apartment block in the capital’s Banani.

In June 2019, another Chinese national was killed in a clash at China-Bangladesh 1320MW thermal power plant project site at Payra in Patuakhali.
