60 sacks rice seized, three including Sirajganj UP member held

At least 60 more sacks of government rice were seized in separate operations and three people were arrested on charge of relief rice theft.

The arrested included Bagbati union parishad member and union Bangladesh Nationalist Party organising secretary Al-Amin Chowdhury alias Palash, Raju Ahmed of village Chandrakona of Khochabari and Akbar Ali.  

Acchia Begum, UP member of Bagbati, fled on hearing the news of the raid.

On Thursday afternoon, villagers broke down the lockdown and staged a demonstration after getting the news about Al-Amin’s arrest following the rice theft.

Meanwhile, sadar upazila assistant commissioner (land) Anisur Rahman in three separate operations at night arrested two with 45 sacks of rice.

Officer-in-charge of sadar police station Mohammad Hafizul Islam said that three cases were filed under the Special Powers Act at sadar police station in connection with the theft of rice.

Baghbati UP chairman Jahangir Alam said that the incident regarding Al-Amin was being investigated by the upazila's nirbahi office.
