Thousands of passengers got stuck on Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway due to heavy traffic movement on Thursday, a day after the government closed all public transports across Bangladesh.
A 22-km long tailback was created on the East end of Bangabandhu Bridge from Ibrahimabadh in Kalihati to Rabna bypass of Tangail.
Vehicular movement came to a halt at different spots on the highway from Bangabandhu Bridge East end to Tangail since Thursday morning.
Traffic Inspector Md Iftekhar Rokon of Bangabandhu Setu East highway outpost, said heavy pressure of homebound people caused the tailback. As the government closed all public transports, the people are returning their home by truck, pickup and other goods carrying vehicles, he said.
Abdullah Miah, a passenger on a Bogra-bound truck stranded at Rabna bypass at 2:00pm, said that he along with others boarded on the truck 5:30am at Mohakhali bus terminal in Dhaka.
Abul Kashem, a lorry driver, said that he started from Dhaka on Thursday morning for Rajshahi but the lorry got stuck at Hatila in Kalihati for the traffic congestion.
New Correspondent in Sirajganj reported that traffic congestion was also created on the west end of Bangabandhu Bridge.
A 15-kilometre long tailback was seen from Bangabandhu Bridge west end to Nalka till Thursday noon.
There is also traffic congestion on an 11-kilometre stretch from Hatikumrul to Sahebganj on Bogura-Nagarbari highway.
Bangabandhu Bridge West police station officer-in-charge Syed Shahid Alam said that the pressure of vehicle on the highway could be compared with the pressure that takes place during Eid holidays.
Sirajganj additional superintendent of police for Kamarkhand circle Shahin Kabir said the traffic congestion was taking place as vehicles continue to leave Dhaka despite the ban on public transport movement. He hoped that the traffic congestion would ease by the evening.
