Suspected robber killed in ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police at village Haripur Shalda in Kushtia sadar uapzila on early Wednesday.

The dead is Mohammad Parvez, a man in his thirties, was a resident of Aruyapara Rajarhat area in the upazila.

Kushtia model police station officer-in-charge Golam Mostafa said they took Parvez, who was picked up from his house several hours before, to conduct a drive to seized some illegal arms at viallae Shalda at about 3:00am.

As they turned up at Shalda, a band of robbers opened fire on police who retaliated by shooting back which triggered a gunfight.

When the attackers retreated, police found Parvez shot and wounded.

He died on the way to Kushtia General Hospital, the officer added.

Three police personnel including sub-inspector Lipon Sarkar were also injured during the gunfight.

Police seized a pistol, a magazine, three cartridges and a billhook from the spot.

Parvez was wanted in at least nine cases, including one for robbery, Golam Mostafa claimed.
