Six-time champions Abahani Limited began their 12th Bangladesh Premier League campaign with a win when the beat promoted Bangladesh Police Football Club by 2-0 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
Nigerian forward Sunday Chizoba and Kyrgyz midfielder Edgar Bernhardt scored either half of the match to give full three points to last season’s runners-up.
Abahani could have taken the lead in the eighth minute but Sunday’s header from inside the box missed the target by a whisker after a cross by captain Nabib Newaz Jibon.
Sunday wasted another chance when he blasted the ball over the crosspiece from 30-yard out in the 25th minute.
Police came near to tale the lead twice but forward Amirul Islam’s headed attempts from inside the box in the 26th and 29th minutes went high on both occasions.
Sunday broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute when his right-footed grounder from inside the box found the back of the net following a through pass by Haitian forward Kervens Belfort from midfield.
After going a goal down Police started to play defensively and could hardly create any chances in the second half against an experienced Abahani.
Abahani forward Saad Uddin was denied by Police defender in the 71st minute when his shot from inside the box was cleared from the goal-line following a corner by Kyrgyz midfielder Edgar Bernhardt.
Edgar doubled the margin in the 83rd minute when his left-footed shot from inside the box found the back of the net following a lay off by Jibon.
