A woman, in her thirties, was held in Rangpur on Saturday for reportedly killing her 52-day baby girl in the face of unbearable torture and abuse in her family for giving birth to her third consecutive daughter.

Police said they arrested Khaleda Begum, wife of day labourer Sultan Mia, for strangulating her third daughter by drowning her in a drum filled with water at village Gopinathpur at Shalti Gopalpur union of Mithapukur upazila in the district on Friday morning.

Mithapukur police station officer-in-charge Zafar Ali Biswas said Khaleda confessed that she had killed her girl, who was born on December 24, 2019, due to the unbearable torture, pain, abuse and intimidation by her husband and in-laws for giving birth to the third consecutive daughter.

Police picked up Khaleda Begum and Sultan Mia on Saturday after the infant was found dead in a pond, where her mother threw her after her death, on Friday afternoon.

Locals said Khaleda Begum was married to Sultan Mia 15 years ago.

The couple has two girls aged 13 and 7 years of age and the third 53 days ago, said police.

Sultan, his father and mother used to scold and torture the mother frequently for not having a boy child.

The woman had also been experiencing regular quarrel and conflict in the family over the issue after the birth of the baby, neighbours added.

Being frustrated and depressed, Khaleda killed her third daughter strangulating, and later threw it in a pond near the house, they added.

Police placed Khaleda in connection with a case filed by her husband Sultan Mia to a judicial magistrate court on Saturday afternoon and the court sent her to judicial custody until next hearing.
