A student of Islamic University in Kushtia was allegedly assaulted by a worker of ‘Gorai’ bus service in Jashore district Thursday night over a trivial matter.

The victim was identified as Monirul Islam Monir, a second-year student of economics department of the university.

Quoting locals, IU police station officer-in-charge Jahangir Arif said that an altercation between Monir and the bus worker took place over spitting while the student was returning to campus from home. Following the altercation, the bus contractor assaulted Monir as he refused to wipe his spit that he threw through the bus window. The student informed his fellow students of the matter.

Later, the students stopped the bus blocking the Kushtia-Khulna Highway around 10:00pm, but its driver and his assistant managed to flee the scene.

On information, the university proctorial body members went to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control with the assistance of Shailakupa police.

Monir, however, said that the bus staff misbehaved with him and told him to wipe the spit. When he tried to protest, the helper assaulted him, he added.

IU proctor Professor Paresh Chandra Barman said that legal action would be taken against the accused after investigating the incident.
