Young women wearing yellow saris, garlands and men in bright panjabis took to the streets across the country to celebrate Pahela Phalgun, the first day of spring, on Friday.
In Dhaka, hundreds thronged fine arts faculty of Dhaka University in the morning where artistes celebrated the advent of spring performing songs and dances at a daylong festival titled ‘Basanta Utsab 1426’.
Jatiya Basanta Utsab Udjapan Parishad organised the festival at four venues in Dhaka. The event commenced at Dhaka University at 7:00am. Besides, cultural shows were held at Rabindra Sarobar in Dhanmondi, Bulbul Lalitakala Academy in Waisghat and Rabindra Sarani in Uttara at different times of the day.
The fine arts faculty premise was colourfully decorated with flowers and bunting.
Thespian Ramendu Majumdar attended the programme at FFA as chief guest. Besides, sculptor Shafiuddin Ahmed, general secretary of Jatiya Basanta Utsab Udjapan Parishad Manjar Chowdhury Sweet and others were present at the programme, presided over vice-president of the organisation Kazal Debnath.
‘Spring brings along colour, warmth and cheerfulness after harsh winter months. Jatiya Basanta Utsab Udjapan Parishad has been celebrating the advent of spring organising special programmes for more than two decades. Such programmes offer the urbanites a much needed refuge from hectic city life,’ said Kazal Debnath.
Artistes entertained the audience with solo and group performances. The programme commenced with a classical music recital by Sushmita Debnath and her team from Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay.
Besides, seasoned artistes like Mita Haque, Rachel Priyanka Parris and others performed at the venue.
Artistes from popular dance troupes including Kathak Nritya Sampraday, Bhabna, Nrityam, Dhrupad Kalakendra, Nritya Nandan, Dhriti Nartanalaya, Bulbul Lalitakala of Fine Arts and others presented group dance recitals.
In solos, Laisa Ahmed Lisa, Bijan Chandra Mistry, Tanjina Tama, Shimu Dey, Rezaul Karim and others rendered songs.
Noted recitation artistes including Ahkam Ullah, Bhaswar Bandyopadhyay, Belayet Hossain and others recited poems.
The morning session of the event ended with artistes and visitors singing Ore grihabashi kholo dar kholo.
The second session of the festival was held from 3:30pm to 8:30pm at FFA.
Students of Barisal Govt Women’s College welcomed spring performing dance recitals and songs at a cultural show held at the college in Barishal city, Barishal district administration organised a programme at Bangabandhu Udyan and Barishal Natak and Udichi Shilpi Gosthi Barishal Branch, in association with other cultural organisations, arranged ‘Basanta Baran Ustab’ at Saraswati School in the city.
In Sylhet, hundreds thronged cultural showes held at Central Shahid Minar, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and Sylhet Agricultural University.
In Mymensingh, artistes entertained the audience at cultural shows held at Baishakhi Mancha in Zainul Abedin Park, district Shilpakala Academy and others.
Besides, different cultural organisations held cultural shows in other divisions namely Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur throughout the day.
