6 die, 2 go missing after boats capsize in Rangamati

Five people died and at least three people went missing after boats capsized in Kaptai Lake and in the Karnaphuli River in Rangamati on Friday.

Police said five people drowned after a motorboat capsized in Kaptai Lake on its way to Sublang from DC Bungalow in the morning.

Four of the dead are Rina Akhter, 32, Shila Akhter, 27, Asma, 22, and Afroza, 14.

One of the dead could not be identified, said Rangamati additional superintendent of police Sufi Ullah in the evening.

Kotwali police station inspector Nurul Islam said that the dead were workers were in a team of excursionists comprising mostly of garment workers of a factory in Chattogram EPZ.

Rangamati General Hospital doctor Shawkat Akbar said that the bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Meanwhile, one died and two went missing after another motorboat carrying members of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskon) capsized in the Karnaphuli near Karnaphuli College at Kaptai upazila at about 12:30pm, said Kaptai police station inspector Atiqul Islam.

United News of Bangladesh reported that the body of Debalina Dey, 10, was found at about 4:00pm, but Tumpa Majumdar, 30, and her son Binay Majumdar, 5, were still missing at 9:00pm.

Bangladesh Navy and Fire Service and Civil Defence divers started their search for the bodies after the accident, said Chandraghona police station officer-in-charge Ashraf Ahmed.
