Trans fat intake increases risk of heart diseases: discussion

Public health experts at a roundtable on Thursday said that excessive intake of trans-fats increases risk of heart diseases as foods enriched with trans-fats increases ‘bad cholesterol’ in blood serum of human bodies.

The trans fat reduces ‘good cholesterol’ and ultimately afflicts people with illness, they said.

They said that that consumers’ health fell in threat due to the lack of policy to regulate excessive levels of trans fat in foods in Bangladesh, according to a press release.

They made their remarks while speaking at roundtable on ‘Trans Fat in Foods, Heart Disease Risks and Necessary Actions: Consumer’s Perspective’ jointly organised by Consumer’s Association of Bangladesh, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh and PROGGA-Knowledge for Progress in association with Global Health Advocacy Incubator at CIRDAP auditorium.

Industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, who attended the programme as chief guest, said that for safeguarding the public health, the government was taking necessary steps to eliminate trans fats from foods

He said that concerned laws would be reformed t to regulate trans-fat, age old acts will be reformed and updated if necessary,’ he  said.

Speaking as special guest public health specialist Muhammad Ruhul Quddus, also country coordinator of GHAI, said that Bangladesh has been exporting food products to foreign nations.  So if trans-fat is not eliminated then those countries will no more buy food products from Bangladesh, he said.

National professor Abdul Malik, founder and president of National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, said that trans fat in foods must be eliminated in order to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

Consumers Association of Bangladesh president Ghulam Rahman said that in order to meet the target set by the World Health Organisation of eliminating trans fat by 2023, the government and the consumer associations need to work together.

Among other guests at the discussion meeting there were  Md Muazzem Hossain, director general of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution, Habibur Rahman, line director NCDC of the Directorate General of Health, Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, general secretary of CAB, and ABM Zubair, executive director of PROGGA.

Conducted by Nadira Kiron, news editor of ATN Bangla, the key speakers of the program were Sohel Reza Choudhury, professor of the epidemiology and research department of NHFB, Md Hasan Shahriar, director and head of program, PROGGA, and Ahmed Ekramullah, program coordinator of CAB.
