Rajshahi University teachers protest at assault on fellow

A section of Rajshahi University teachers on Thursday protested against the assault on their fellow teacher allegedly by one of his colleagues on Tuesday.

The teachers also demanded punishment of RU crop science and technology department Professor Md Khairul Islam who allegedly pushed his colleague Professor Md Ali Asgar at the agriculture faculty dean office, causing the later fainted.

More than fifty teachers and students of the university brought out a silent procession on the campus and joined at a short rally in front of the university’s Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Senate Building to press home their demand.

Management department assistant professor Solaiman Chowdhury alleged Professor Md Ali Asgar was assaulted intentionally as he stood against the university’s current administration’s corruptions and irregularities.

‘We strongly protested against his heinous act and urge the university authorities to take legal action against him,’ said geology and mining department Professor Sultan-Ul-Islam.

Mentionable, a conflict between Professor Khairul Islam, who is known to loyal to the university’s current administration, and Professor Ali Asgar, who is among the group of the university teachers who have been demonstrating since October 2, ensued after the later filed a writ petition with the High Court Division challenging legality of circular of the university authorities published for recruiting three teachers at the department.

Recently, the High Court declared the recruitment circular and the appointment of three teachers illegal.

On Wednesday, Professor Asgar Ali alleged that he was allegedly pushed on the ground by Professor Khairul Islam while he was standing beside dean’s office.

However, Professor Md Khairul Islam denied the allegation and claimed that Professor Ali Asgar was stealing some confidential documents, of newly appointed three teachers at the department, that he given to the office peon to take to the university account section.

‘I did not touch him (Ali Asgar). Rather he acted as a senseless man as he was caught red-handed while photocopying those documents,’ Professor Khairul Islam claimed.

Meanwhile, the university registrar Professor MA Bari told New Age that the newly appointed three teachers of the department submitted a written complaint to him against Professor Ali Asgar allegedly of stealing their official documents.
