Awami League general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said that the government could not consider releasing Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on parole without any logical ground.
‘None so far has applied to the home ministry for Khaleda Zia’s release on parole. Even, if they apply, it should have a logical ground,’ he said at the inaugural session of triennial council of Tungipara upazila unit of AL.
Quader said that BNP claimed family members of Khaleda Zia had applied in various ways for her release on parole but the home ministry did not get any application.
‘BNP makes application on television screen’ not in reality, he added.
Pointing to BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the AL general secretary said like BNP, Awami League does not do politics of vengeance.
About Khaleda’s illness, Quader said that BNP leaders were making misleading accounts of Khaleda’s illness which were contradictory to the physicians’ opinions.
The minister said that BNP leaders were not anxious about Khaleda’s physical condition rather they were doing politics with it.
Quader said that neither Awami League nor the government sent Khaleda Zia to jail.
Khaleda had been in jail after being convicted in the case filed during the last caretaker government, he said adding that the case was not a political one rather a graft case.
‘If it was a political case, the government could consider releasing her. But only the court has the jurisdiction to give her release in the graft case,’ he said.
Chaired by Tungipara upazila AL acting president Ilias Hossain, the function was addressed by AL advisory council member Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, parliament member Sheikh Helal Uddin, AL joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, state minister for religious affairs Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, AL organising secretaries Mirza Azam and SM Kamal Hossain, Gopalganj district AL general secretary Mahbub Ali Khan, parliament member Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel, Tungipara upazila chairman Solaiman Biswas, municipality mayor Sheikh Ahmed Hossain Mirza, and Tungipara upazila AL general secretary Abul Bashar Khayer, among others.
Gopalganj district AL president Emdadul Haque Chowdhury inaugurated the council.
In the second session, Abul Bashar Khayer and Md Babul Sheikh were made president and general secretary respectively of Tungipara upazila AL while Sheikh Saiful Islam and Forkan Biswas were announced president and general secretary respectively of Tungipara municipality unit of AL.
