Today is the 77th birth anniversary of late novelist and short story writer Akhteruzzaman Elias.
He was born in the village of Gotia in Gaibandha District on February 12, 1943.
Akhteruzzaman Elias completed his matriculation from Bogra Zila School, intermediate from Dhaka College and BA (Hons) and MA from the Dhaka University.
He began his career as a lecturer at Jagannath College and continued teaching there till 1983.
Though he penned only two novels and twenty-two short stories, Akhteruzzaman is considered as one of the foremost fiction writers of the country.
His two novels are Chilekothar Sepai (1987) and Khoyabnama (1996), while his short stories have been anthologised in Anyaghare Anyasvar (1976), Khonyari (1982), Dudhbhate Utpat (1985), Dojakher Om (1989). His collection of essays, Sangskrtir Bhaba Setu, was published posthumously in 1997.
He had received several awards including Humayun Kabir Smriti Puraskar in 1977, Bangla Academy Sahitya Puraskar in 1983, Alaol Sahitya Puraskar in 1987, Kazi Mahbubullah Gold Medal in 1996, Ekushey Padak posthumously in 1998 and others.
He died on January 4 in 1997 in Dhaka.
