A two-day Shah Abdul Karim folk festival starts on March 3 at Derai upazila
in Sunamganj district, the birthplace of the late bard and folk singer.
The festival, titled ‘Shah Abdul Karim Loko Utsab 2017’, organised by Baul Samrat Shah Abdul Karim Parishad, will also mark the 101st birth anniversary of the late folk singer.
The festival will feature performances by folk singers of the greater Sylhet division, discussion on Shah Abdul Karim and more, said speakers at a press conference on Thursday. All time is the title sponsor of the festival.
The conference was attended by Shah Abdul Karim’s son Nur Jalal, head of marketing of All Time.
‘The festival will celebrate Baul Samrat Shah Abdul Karim’s life and works at his birth place’, said Nur Jalal.
Shah Abdul Karim (1916- 2009) composed over 1,500 songs and achieved huge fame during his lifetime. Among his well-known songs are Jhil Mil Jhil Mil Kore, Bonde Maya Lagaise, Kano Piritee Barailarey Bondhu, Gari Cholena Cholena, Agey Ki Shundor Din Kataitham, Boshonto Batashey and many others.
The bard was awarded Ekushey Padak in
2001 for his contribution to music.
