Shana wins top BSPA prize

Bangladesh Sports Press Association on Friday named country’s leading archer Ruman Shana as the Sportsman of the Year 2019 in the colourful programme held at a city hotel.

Shana, a triple gold medal winner in the 2019 SA Games beat cricket ace Sakib al Hasan and national football team captain Jamal Bhuyan to win the award, which was selected by a panel.

Shana also won the Popular Choice Award ahead of other sports persons, an award which was decided through public vote on the BSPA’s official website.

Apart from Shana, Sakib and Jamal were also listed for the ‘Popular Choice Award’ along with South Asian Games gold medallist karateka Marzan Akter Priya, weightlifter Mabia Akhter and fencer Fatima Mujib.

Sakib, Shana, Jamal, Simanta and Fatima were also named as athlete of the year in their respective fields.

Humayra Akter Antara and Dipu Chakma were named athlete of the year in karate and taekwondo respectively while archer Ety Khatun won the promising athlete of the year award.

Ety, Antara and Dipu had won gold medals in the 13th SA Games, held in Nepal in early December 2019.

Bangladesh archery team’s German coach Martin Frederick was named coach of the year while Archery Federation secretary Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapal was adjudged as organiser of the year

Bangladesh archery team sponsor ‘City Group’ was selected as the best sponsor of the year.

Athletics coach Rafiqullah Akhter Milon and football coach Tajul Islam were handed special prize for their contribution as grassroots level. 

The BSPA also selected former kabaddi player and coach Abdul Jalil for special honour for his contribution to the country’s sport.

AIPS ASIA president Sattam Alsehali and Square Pharmaceuticals Limited managing director Anjan Chowdhury were present as guest of honour during the programme and distributed the prizes among the winners.
