Today is the 196th birth anniversary of poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt.
The occasion will be observed through different programmes in Jashore town and Sagardari, the birth place of the poet, under Keshabpur upazila in Jashore today.
Besides, a week-long Madhu Fair is under way. Sagardari wears a festive during the Madhu Fair. People from all walks of life come to the fair to pay tribute to the poet.
Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born at Sagardari under Keshabpur upazila in Jashore on January 25, 1824. It was Saturday. Land lord Raj Narayan Dutta was his father. His mother’s name was Janhabi Devi.
He passed away at Kolkata General Hospital at around 2pm on June 29, 1873, Sunday, after the death of his wife Henrietta on June 26, three days before his death. He was buried at Park Street, Kolkata, India.
Madhusudan penned the famous epic- Meghnadbadh (1861). He enriched Bangla literature with his creations comprising dramas, poems, translated books and others.
His literary works include Sharmishtha (1859), Ekei Ki Bale Shabhyata (1860), Buro Shaliker Ghare Ro (1860), Padmabati (1860), Tilattama Shambhab (1860), Krishnakumari (1861), Nil Darpan(1861), Hector Badh (1871), Mayakanan (1874), The Captive Lady (1849) and others.
