Bangladesh Under-19 team took a giant step towards the quarter-finals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup by defeating their Scottish counterparts by seven-wicket in their second Group C match in Potchefstroom, South Africa on Tuesday.
Left-arm spinner Rakibul Islam claimed a hat-trick and finished with 4-20 to help the junior Tigers bundle out Scotland for a paltry 89 in 30.3 overs after they were asked to bowl first.
In reply, the Bangladesh boys were looking vulnerable at 35-3 inside five overs but an unbeaten 56-run stand for the fourth wicket between Mahmudul Hasan Joy (35) and Towhid Hridoy (17) took them to 91-3 in 16.4 overs.
With the win, Bangladesh sit top of the four-team group with two wins in two matches as they earlier thrashed Zimbabwe by nine-wicket in their tournament opener on Saturday.
Bangladesh could seal a quarter-final spot today, if Pakistan defeat Zimbabwe in their Group C match.
‘It feels good to win back to back matches and gives us some confidence heading to our next game against Pakistan. We will try to beat them and look at getting to the next round having finished at the top of the group,’ Bangladesh skipper Akbar Ali was quoted saying after the match by the ICC.
Earlier, pacers Shoriful Islam (2-13) and Tanzim Hasan (2-26) claimed two-wicket each to reduce Scotland to 5-52 in the 18th over.
In the third ball of the 24th over, Rakib bowled Kess Sajjad (seven) before handing Lyle Robertson and Charlie Peet golden ducks in his next two balls to complete his hat-trick and Scotland’s innings also folded shortly.
‘I feel very great today with getting the first hat-trick of my career. My teammates were also excited,’ ICC quoted Rakib.
Sean Fischer-Keogh (3-27) claimed three quick wickets to put Bangladesh under some pressure but Mahmudul and Hridoy safely shepherded Bangladesh to victory.
Bangladesh will face Pakistan on January 24 in their final Group C match in Potchefstroom.
Scotland U-19 89 all out in 30.3 overs (Uzzair 28; Rakibul 4-20, Shoriful 2-13) v Bangladesh U-19 91-3 in 16.4 overs (Mahmudal 35 not out; Fischer-Keogh 3-27)
Result: Bangladesh Under-19 team won by seven wickets.
