Parliament adopts condolence motion

Ruling Awami League lawmaker and former state minister for public administration Ismat Ara Sadique died at the age of 78 at a hospital in Dhaka at about 11:00am on Tuesday. The Awami League politician is survived by a son and a daughter.

An Eden College graduate, Ismat joined Awami League following her husband ASHK Sadeq in 1992.

Born in Keshabpur of Jashore in 1942, she established the Keshabpur unit of Mahila Awami League in 1996.

She was elected as a member of parliament in 2014 and was included as the state minister in the then-Hasina cabinet.

In separate condolence messages, president Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Jashore-6 constituency representative in the parliament.

Later on the day, parliament unanimously adopted a condolence motion at the death of its member.

Speaking in the motion, the prime minister said that after the death of Ismat’s husband ASHK Sadek, she requested her to compete in Jashore-6 constituency in the ninth general election.

Tofail Ahmed, Abdus Shahid, state minister for rural development and co-operatives division Shwapan Bhattacharjee, state minister for public administration Farhad Hossain, AKM Sarwar Jahan, Waseqa Ayesha Khan, Kazi Nabil Ahmed also took part in the discussion of the condolence motion where they shed lights on late Ismat Ara Sadeque’s life.

According to the parliamentary tradition, Tuesday’s business was adjourned in honour of the late parliament member.
