Artistes of Mohananda Jhandi Dal, a Chapainawabganj-based troupe, entertained the audience rendering traditional Jhandi Gaan at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy premises on the 17th day of Bangladesh Cultural Festival 2020 on Sunday.
Jhandi Gaan depicts the tragic story of Karbala. Artistes traditionally perform the song during the holy Ashura commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). Hussain and his 72 companions including friends and family members were martyred at the hand of Yazid’s troops at the battle of Karbala in Iraq in 680 AD.
Artistes make a traditional musical instrument with bamboo which is called ‘Jhandi’ or ‘Jhanni’. Between Eight and ten performers stand in a circle and hit each other’s instruments while the leader of the troupe stands at the centre and sing the song.
The artistes of Mohananda Jhandi Dal were led by Alam Hossain during the performance on Sunday.
Earlier, the day’s programme commenced with rendition of the national anthem. Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Acrobatic Troupe performed various stunts and special children namely Shupto, Shushmi and Safin staged dance recitals to the delight of the audience.
Noted recitation artiste Shimul Mustapha recited poems at the programme. Besides, artistes of dance troupe Nrityangan performed dance recital. Besides, instrumentalists of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy presented group instrumental recital on flute.
Three documentary videos on Faridpur, Noakhali and Sherpur were also screened at the programme. Artistes of the districts performed songs, dance recitals, jokes and others.
The second edition of Bangladesh Cultural Festival 2020 began on January 3. The festival will end on January 23. Over five thousand artistes from 64 districts of the country are participating in the festival.
