Theatre activists pay final tributes to Nishat

Friends, peers and well-wishers paid tribute to renowned theatre activist-recitation artiste Ishrat Nishat at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Monday afternoon.

Ishrat Nishat passed away at the age of 56 in her sister’s residence in capital’s Gulshan at about 11:30pm on Sunday.

Her body was taken to Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at 1:30pm and kept there till 3:00pm.

Cultural affairs ministry, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, Bangladesh Abritti Sangathan Samannay Parishad, Bangladesh Mahila Samity, Dhaka Theatre, Theatre, Subanchan Natya Sangsad, Theatre Art Unit,  BotTola ,Shabdabali Group Theatre, Nagarik Natyangan Bangladesh, Desh Natok and others placed floral wreaths on her coffin.

State minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Ghulam Quddus, thespian Mamunur Rashid, Directors’ Guild president Salauddin Lavlu, thespian Lucky Enam, theatre activist M Hamid, BSA director general Liaquat Ali Lucky and others spoke at the programme.

‘Nishat’s passing away has left huge void in the country’s theatre scene. She never hesitated to protest against anomalies. May her departed soul rest in peace,’ said KM Khalid.

‘I met her three days ago at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. She said that she is unwell and may not live long. Her words have come true. She often helped me by pointing out my mistakes in theatre productions. She will live on through her works,’ said Liaquat Ali Lucky.

‘Nishat always came to Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to hang out with her friends. Everyone liked her. She participated in all cultural movements. Her contribution to country’s theatre scene cannot be described in words,’ said Ghulam Quddus.

‘I have known her for a long time. I talked to Nishat over phone just two days ago. She was a dedicated theatre artiste,’ said Lucky Enam.

‘I heard in the morning that Nishat is no more. The news of her death came to me as a shock. She dedicated her life to theatre,’ said Salauddin Lavlu.

Nishat was involved with Desh Natok for years. She was theatre actor, director, lighting designer, playwright and recitation artiste.

She designed set and lighting for a number of plays and recitation productions.  Desh Natok’s production Arokkhita, directed by Nishat, received huge response from the theatre lovers. Besides, she acted in Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu directed film Alpha.

The first namaj-e-janaza of Ishrat Nishat was held at Dhaka University mosque after asr prayer. She was buried at Banani graveyard.
