Six held as man killed for protesting at niece teasing

A young man was stabbed to death allegedly for objecting to stalking of his niece by some boys at Bagha upazila in Rajshahi Tuesday evening.

The deceased was identified Nazmul Hossain, 20, son of Azizur Rahman of Sultanpur village of the upazila.

The police on Wednesday arrested at least six suspects in this connection while the main accused was still on the run, according to the local police.

Neighbours and police officials said, Sumon Ali, a resident of Monipur village had been harassing the daughter of school teacher Shahjahan Ali for long.

On Tuesday, the girl’s brother Tariqul Islam and her maternal uncle Nazmul Hossain complained to Sumon’s father about the incidents.

Bagha Police Station officer-in-charge Nazrul Islam told New Age that a group of 10-15 youths attacked the girl’s father Shahjahan Ali in the afternoon with sharp weapons and sticks.

The youths also stabbed and beat up the girl’s brother Tariqul Islam and her maternal uncle Nazmul Hossain who went to save the school teacher.

Later, the locals rushed the Tariqul and Nazmul to Bagha Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctor declared Nazmul dead.

OC Nazrul Islam said that the school girl’s father filed a case in the night accusing 23 named people and 4-5 more unnamed.

‘We have arrested six persons including two women in this connection’, OC said adding that the main accused Sumon was still on the run.

Meanwhile, teachers and students of Khanpur JP High School formed a human chain on Wednesday demanding capital punishment of the attackers and the stalkers. They issued a seven-day ultimatum to arrest the perpetrators.
