A three-day Poush Mela (winter festival) ended at Jagadish Saraswat Girls’ School & College in the Barishal city on Monday night.

Barisal branch of Jatiyo Rabindra Sangeet Sammelan Parishad (JRSSP) organised the event.

Professor Sadequl Arefin, vice chancellor of Barishal University, inaugurated the three-day winter festival by lighting lamps on Saturday evening. Barishal City Corporation mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah was present as chief guest at the programme, presided over by JRSSP Barishal branch president Kajol Ghosh.

‘Winter festivals are integral part of our culture. People from all walks of life gather at such festivals, which play an important role in spreading cultural practices in society,’ said Sadequl Arefin.

‘It is a great initiative. Traditional festivals play an important role in popularising cultural activities among the younger generation,’ said Serniabad Sadik Abdullah.

Despite bitter cold people from all walks of time thronged the venue daily. The festival featured children’s painting competition along with stalls displaying traditional pithas (cakes), toys, handicraft items, cloths and others.

Besides, artistes entertained the audience presenting songs, dance recitals, recitation and more.
