Tributes paid to Selim Al Deen

Theatre activists and troupes paid tribute to the late legendary playwright and theoretician Selim Al Deen on his 12th anniversary of death, which was observed on Tuesday.

Theatre troupes Dhaka Theatre, Swapnadal and Jahangirnagar University’s drama and dramatics department, of which Selim Al Deen was the founder chairman, organised programmes commemorating his life and works at different venues.

Bangladesh Gram Theatre, Dhaka Theatre, Swapnadal, Selim Al Deen Foundation, Arshinagar Theatre, Jahangirnagar Theatre, Puppet Theatre Research Centre, JU Teacher and Student Centre, Kalma Theatre, Shaheed Titu Theatre, Selim Al Deen Memorial Society and others placed floral wreaths on the grave of the playwright at Jahangirnagar University, where he taught until his death, in the morning.

Selim al Deen was one of the founding members of Dhaka Theatre, which is a leading theatre troupe of the country.

Dhaka Theatre organised a programme on Selim Al Deen at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the evening where Khoabjaner Pala directed by Sayik Siddiqui was staged. It has been produced by Ahir Bangla, Dhaka.

Swapnadal has organised a three-day Selim Al Deen Utsab at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The troupe has been organising programmes marking the birth and death anniversaries of Selim Al Deen since 2010.

The theatre festival began with staging of Selim Al Deen’s much-acclaimed play Hargaj. The festival will feature the play Tringsha Shatabdi today. Besides, a seminar will be held at Seminar Room of National Theatre Hall of BSA on Friday.

JU drama and dramatics department has organised a two-day programme on its campus.

A solo photography exhibition titled ‘Selim Al Deen in the Lens of Barin Ghosh’ was held at JU old Arts building.

Students of drama and dramatics department staged Natoker Gaan at Theatre Lab of old Arts Building.

A seminar titled ‘Selim Al Deen O Ei Jey Ami’ was held at Zahir Raihan Auditorium where thespian Ataur Rahman presented the keynote paper. The programme was presided over by Dr Soma Momtaz, chairperson of drama and dramatics department.

In the evening, a play titled Dohondoita was staged at Theatre Lab of Zahir Raihan Auditorium. It has been directed by Professor AKM Yousuf Hasan and written by Shuvasis Sinha.

Today, a discussion on Selim Al Deen’s play Joiboti Konyar Mon will be held at the Theatre Lab of Old Arts building. Besides, the play Sohrab-Rustom will be staged at Theatre Lab of Zahir Raihan Auditorium in the evening.
