One killed in Dhaka ‘gunfight’

A man was killed and two others were injured in a reported gunfight with the members of Rapid Action Battalion at Malibagh in Dhaka on Sunday morning.

The dead is Iqbal Ahmed, 45, and the injured are Rafika Jesmin, 29, and her brother Masnur Hasan, 22, claimed RAB, who branded them as ‘drug pedlars’.

RAB officers also said that Rafika was the apparent lover of Iqbal.

The RAB and hospital officers said that the incident took place at about 6:00am and Iqbal was declared dead at about 9:30am at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The RAB in text message stated that they seized more than one lakh pieces of Yaba pills, Tk 2 lakh, a pistol and a bullet.

Ramna police station subinspector Murad Khan said the RAB officers were on operation and got into a ‘gunfight.’

He said RAB termed them ‘drug dealers’ and they were examining their identities.

Iqbal was from Deoghogh of Narayanganj.

The New Age correspondent in DMCH reported that Iqbal’s first wife and their children were living in Dhaka. 

Since April 2018, over 470 people, including some Rohingyas, were killed in the reported gunfights with the law enforcement agencies.
