A group art exhibition featuring artworks by leading local and Indian artists began at Zainul Gallery of the fine arts faculty of Dhaka University on Wednesday.
The exhibition titled ‘Calling of the Roots’ has been organised by Indian organisation Prachi Protichi in association with drawing and painting department of DU. It features works by 22 local and 26 Indian artists.
Artworks by local artists Rafiqun Nabi, Shahabuddin Ahmed, Alokesh Ghosh, Jamal Ahmed, Mustafizul Haque, Rokeya Sultana, Sheikh Afzal Hossain, Bishwajit Goswami, Nisar Hossain, Abdus Sattar, Indian artists M F Hussain, Bijan Chowdhury, Buddhadev Guha, Somnath Hore, Suhas Roy, Prakash Karmakar, Robin Mondol, Jogen Chowdhury, Washim Kapoor and Dhiraj Chowdhury, among others, have been displayed at the show.
Eminent artist Rafiqun Nabi was present as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition held on January 8. Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad president acclaimed artist Jamal Ahmed and DU drawing and painting department chairman Professor Mustafizul Haque were present as special guests.
The artworks address issues like women, nature, devotion, struggles of working class people in society, animals, motherhood and others.
To mention a few works, local artist Ahmed Shamsuddoha’s work shows deers grazing in the Sundarbans. The background is covered with green trees.
Bangladeshi artist Jamal Ahmed’s work shows two fishermen catching fishes at sea while the background shows fishing boats in deep sea.
Local artist Hasna Akter Rumki’s work portrays a pregnant woman sleeping.
Paris-based renowned Bangladeshi artist Shahabuddin Ahmed has displayed a sketch depicting a galloping horse.
Indian artist Jatin Das’s work shows a female figure comprising various lines and forms.
Indian artist Suhas Roy has displayed a portrait of a beautiful woman. The edges of the portrait are covered by various lines, forms and dots of diverse colours.
Indian artist M F Hussain’s work shows a family playing cricket.
The exhibition will end on January 14.
