A schoolgirl committed suicide at Jogatber village in Patgram upazila allegedly because of the harassment and threats she received from a local young man.
The deceased, 12, was a Class VII student of Jogatber High School. Her body was found hanging at 9:00am on Monday.
The accused, 17, is a first-year student of Patgram College and has been absconding after the incident.
The victim’s father Mahesh Chandra said the accused had been harassing the girl for some days. Seven days ago, the young man apologised for his action in a local arbitration and pledged to harass her never again.
However, on December 31, he again harassed the girl while she was coming back home from school. After she disclosed the incident to her parents, they reported it to the family of the accused.
Following the complaint, Gobinda reportedly assaulted the victim’s father and threatened to marry the girl forcefully.
On Sunday, Gobinda reportedly harassed her again, which instigated her to commit suicide, the family said.
Patgram police station OC Sumon Kumar Mahanto said legal actions will be taken after receiving post-mortem examination report.
