The celebration of 30th founding anniversary of the Department of Narcotics Control began in Gaibandha as elsewhere in the country on Thursday amid festivity.
Marking the founding anniversary, district administration and DNC, chalked out elaborate programmes with the theme ‘Will Prevent Drugs, Will Build Bangabandhu’s Sonar Bangla.’
In the morning around 10:00am, a rally led by deputy commissioner Abdul Matin from the premises of district collectorate building in Gaibandha started that ended at the same venue after parading the main roads of the district town.
Later, a cake cutting function was held at the conference room of DC office in Gaibandha. Abdul Matin formally cut the cake as the chief guest.
Then, a discussion meeting was held there with additional deputy commissioner (general) Alamgir Kabir Saikat in the chair.
Abdul Matin attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest and civil surgeon ABM Abu Hanif, Gaibandha Municipality mayor Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon and sadar UNO Prasun Kumar Chakrabartee also spoke at the ceremony as special guests.
The meeting was also addressed, among others, by district education officer Enayet Hossain, district primary education officer Hossain Ali, inspector of the DNC Anwarul Habib, regional coordinator of friendship Abdus Salam, journalist Sarker Mohammad Shahiduzzaman, and student Avijit Mahanta.
The speakers said drug taking had become one of the social diseases and barriers to the socio-economic development of the country.
They also underscored the need for building social movement and creating awareness to the people about the bad effects of narcotics to build a drug free happy and prosperous country.
Earlier, assistant commissioner of DC office Syeda Saleha Nur made a power point presentation on definition of narcotics, its bad impacts to human body and the society, punishment for taking it, and gave suggestions to get rid of the curse of the drugs elaborately.
Abdul Matin said it was not possible for any individual, group, department or the government to contain the drug abuse until the social movement should be built against the drugs and it would have to start from the family and the society.
In this context, the deputy commissioner urged all the stakeholders of the society to come forward with the positive attitude and play role and keep much contribution in this regard from their respective position.
He also sought cooperation of all towards the staff of DNC and law enforcing agencies with information about the drug traders and traffickers so that they could be brought under trial.
Later, the prizes were distributed to the winners who took part in the essay writing and quiz competitions marking the founding anniversary of the department.
The programme was followed by a cultural function where a number of artistes of the district town rendered songs to entertain the participants.
A large number of students, teachers, district and upazila level officials, political leaders, NGO representatives, civil society members, and journalists of print, electronic and online media participated in the programmes spontaneously.
The celebration of founding anniversary would continue till January 8, office sources said.
