Protesters demand resignation of proctor

The Students’ Unity against Violence on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Dhaka University vice-chancellor M Akhtaruzzman demanding resignation of the university proctor AKM Golam Rabbani.

The new alliance accused Golam Rabbani of failing to protect students during attacks by ruling party-backed Chhatra League and Muktijuddha Mancha on the Dhaka University Central Student Union Building on December 22 that left at least 40 injured including the union vice-president Nurul Huq Nur.

They handed over the memorandum to vice-chancellor Akhtaruzzaman at his office in the noon.

They also placed a four-point charter of demands including ensuring punishment and academic expulsion of those attacked Nurul and others, withdrawal of cases, bearing the medical expenses of the injured by the university, ensuring democratic practice amd students’ security on the campus, and stopping ‘Guest Room’ ‘Gana Room’ at the halls of residence.

They also gave an ultimatum till January 8 to meet their demands and also threatened to wage tougher movement if the university authorities failed to meet the demands.

On December 27, 12 student organisations announced formation of the new alliance in the wake of attack at DUCSU Building with the call to establish a campus free from violence and occupation.

The alliance members are Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, Bangladesh Chhatra Federation (Ganosamhati Andolan) , Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (Marxist), Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Biplobi Chhatra Maitree , Bangladesh Chhatra Federation(Jatiya Mukti Council) , Biplabi Chhatra-Jubo Andolan,  Greater Chittagong Hill Tracts Pahari Chhatra Parishad, Nagarik Chhatra Oikya, Swatantra Jote and Chhatra Mancha.

At least four cases were over the December 22 violence. 

On December 28, a Chhatra League leader filed a case accusing DUCSU vice-president Nurul Huq Nur under the Digital Security Act for his Facebook live streaming, which criticised Chhatra League leaders.

On December 26, another former leader of Chhatra League filed a case with the Shahbagh police station accusing Nurul and 28 others.

On December 23, sub-inspector Rois Hossain of Shahbagh police station in his FIR named Muktijuddha Mancha president Aminul Islam Bulbul, its secretary Al Mamun, its Dhaka University chapter president ASM Al Sonet and Secretary Yasir Arafat for the attack.

Later, Nurul Huq in his FIR named Sonjit Chandra Das, president of Dhaka University unit Chhatra League, its secretary Saddam Hossain, Muktijuddha Mancha president Aminul Islam Bulbul, and its secretary Al Mamun, among others.

Following the attack, the Dhaka University authorities launched an investigation.
