Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said Wednesday that auctioning car number plates was under the government’s consideration.
Emerging from the meetings of the cabinet committee on economic affairs and national purchases at the cabinet division, he told reporters that auctioning the number plates would be a big source of earning for the government.
He said that the practice was on in Singapore and many other countries.
Mustafa Kamal said that car owners would have the option to design the number plates of their cars by paying fees.
He said that stakeholders agreed to hold an auction soon.
Earlier, the cabinet committee on national purchase asked the ministry of road transport and highways division re-tendering the ‘Supply of Personalized Dual Interface Polycarbonate Smart Card Motor Driving License’ due to lack of reliable suppliers.
The committee approved four proposals including for the procurement of chemicals worth Tk 87.02 crore for a fertiliser factory, buying goods worth Tk 191.9 crore for the Rural Electrification Board, importing crude oil from Saudi Arabia worth Tk 6,578 crore and importing fuel oils worth Tk 5000.40 crore.
The cabinet committee on economic affairs at its meeting approved importing urea from Saudi Arabia under govt-to- govt purchase system.
