A suspected Rohingya robber was killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion members at Muchani refugee camp at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar at about 8:30pm on Monday.

The dead is Anwar Sadek, a man in his thirties, of the Muchani camp.

A total of 58 Rohingyas were killed in reported gunfights with the law enforcement agencies in 2019.

RAB 15 deputy commanding officer Mohammad Rabiul Islam said a RAB team raided on the camp to seize illegal arms and contraband Yaba pills.

As the team started its raid at about 5:30pm, suspected robbers opened fire on them and two RAB soldiers were wounded, he also said.

Later, they started search to catch the attackers at night. When they were conducting searches, suspects again attacked them, who retaliated by firing back, which started a gunfight.

At a point, attackers stepped back and RAB members found a suspected robber shot and killed.

They handed over the body of Anwar Sadek to the Teknaf police, who sent the body to Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital morgue for post-mortem examination, said deputy commanding officer Mohammad Rabiul Islam.

A case was filed with the Teknaf police station in this connection.
