Rail link with Dhaka snapped after RAB detained gateman

Railway communications between the capital and rest of the country were suspended for about two hours on Monday after Rapid Action Battalion members picked up a gateman from Koshaibari level crossing at Uttara in Dhaka following an altercation.

The gatemen of other nearby level crossings blocked railway in protest at the action and in demand of the gateman’s release.

They blocked the railroad from 2:50pm and 4:40pm snapping rail communications between Dhaka and all routes from Chattogram, Sylhet, northern and southern routes.

Airport railway station master Moron Chandra Das told New Age that on Monday at 11:00am the Karnaphuli Express train was going to Chattogram from Dhaka.

When the train was crossing the Koshaibari level crossing then the gateman Al Amin fall the barrier, he said.

RAB members on a vehicle were on the road and they asked the gateman to let them go.

As the gateman denied and urged them to wait for crossing the train the RAB members got down, beat up Al Amin and picked him up, claimed Moron Charndra Das.

When the other gatemen came to know the incident, they blocked the level crossing gates at the area between 2:50pm and 4:40pm, he said.

Moron Chandra Das said that hearing the news they went to the agitated gatemen and requested them to join the work. 

The gatemen then joined the work and train communication became normal after 4:40pm, he said.

‘I went to the RAB office along with the mother of Al Amin and then the RAB officials released Al Amin after taking undertaken,’ he said.

He said that the RAB officials alleged that Al Amin was involved in drug smuggling

Replying to a question, Moron said that they had no previous record earlier.

Railway director traffic and public relations Shafiqur Rahman said that he only knew that Al Amin was picked by RAB members and later he was release.

RAB’s legal and media wing director Sarwar Bin Kashem told New Age on Monday that they had taken away Al Amin for some interrogation on different allegations including drug and extortion.

Later he was released on undertaken, he added.

An official of the elite force, seeking anonymity, said that the gateman hit one of their members during the incident.
