A motorcyclist and a pillion passenger were injured as the minaret of a mosque collapsed, during bulldozing, on the motorcycle carrying them on a road at Naya Sarak in Sylhet on Monday.
A parked CNG-run auto-rickshaw was also partly damaged under the minaret.
The injured motorcyclist Mostaq Ahmad, 35, was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition and his pillion passenger was given first aid, Kotwali police officer-in-charge Selim Miah told New Age.
Locals said, ‘the minaret of three-storey Naya Sarak Jame-Mosque fell down upon the moving motorcycle and the parked CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the road when the minaret was being bulldozed for the purpose of reconstruction at noon.’
Being informed, a team of Sylhet Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot, sent the injured to the hospital and removed the collapsed minaret from the road at about 3:00pm.
The police officer Selim alleged that the Sylhet City Corporation employees were responsible for the collapse as they were bulldozing the minaret without protective measure.
He said, ‘The bulldozer’s driver was detained but was later released on the request of mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury.’
