Mishap kills Payra power plant worker

A worker of the under-construction coal-based Payra power plant was killed as a heavy iron pipe fell on him on Friday at the site in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district.

The severely injured labourer, Tareq Ibrahim Khan, 26, was rushed to Kalapara upazila health complex where on duty doctor declared him dead.

Shah Moni Zico, assistant manager of the 1320-MW power plant, located in the Dhankhali area of the upazila, confirmed the matter and said Ibrahim, son of Aiyub Ali, was a resident of Kalijira area near Barishal city.

Zico said Ibrahim was working at the coal storing yard beside which some heavy iron pipes were being lifted on the roof of an under-construction multi-story building with a crane.

At about 11:00am, a pipe fell down from the crane on Ibrahim who was critically injured and became unconscious. Later, doctors at the local health complex declared him dead.

Kalapara police station officer-in-charge Md Monirul Islam said the body was sent to Patuakhali General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
