The weeklong national income tax fair is set to begin tomorrow across the country to provide services related to income tax payment to existing taxpayers, encourage potential taxpayers to pay the tax and raise awareness among the people about tax payment.

Along with other prevailing services, taxpayers will be able to pay their income tax using mobile financial services including Bkash and Rocket for the first time from the first day of the tax fair, National Board of Revenue chairman Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

The revenue board arranged the briefing at its auditorium in Dhaka on the occasion of the 10th nationwide tax fair. The NBR introduced the fair in 2010.

This year, seven-day long income tax fair will be held at seven divisional cities, four-day fair at 56 district headquarters, two-day fair at 48 upazilas and one-day fair at eight upazilas.

Mosharraf also said that they were planning to form a pool of reputed accounting and audit firms and would make preparations of audit reports by them mandatory for a number of corporate taxpayers to prevent fake audit reports for evading income tax.

The NBR will also take punitive actions against the selected firms if there are any irregularities in the reports, he said, adding that there were allegations that many local companies prepared two sets of audit reports — one for tax purpose and one for other uses.

Hopefully, corporate taxpayers will maintain actual books of accounts once the NBR would be able to implement the plan, he added.

Regarding the tax fair, the NBR chairman said that finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal would inaugurate the fair at the Officers’ Club in Dhaka, the central venue of the fair.

The fair venues will remain open from 9:00am to 5:00pm for taxpayers and visitors.

He said that taxpayers would be able to pay income tax through mobile financial services including Bkash, Rocket, U Pay, Nagad, Sure Cash and other platforms which had already been interconnected with the e-payment portal of the revenue board.

The NBR for the first time developed a web site ‘’ so that taxpayers can avail a number of services including obtaining electronic taxpayers identification number, filing income tax returns online, payment of tax online and downloading the required forms by visiting the web site.

Taxpayers will also be able to know the necessary information related to the tax fair visiting the site.

Mosharraf said that like the previous years, taxpayers would be able to obtain e-TIN, file tax returns, make payment and avail necessary information related to income tax from the fair venues.

There will be booths of Sonali Bank, Janata Bank and BASIC Bank at the venues for receiving tax, he said.

Taxpayers will have time to file their tax returns up to November 30, which is also observed as the National Income Tax Day and the last date of returns submission.

He hoped that the number of tax returns would reach 30 lakh in the current fiscal year 2019-2020 from that of around 22 lakh in last fiscal year FY 2018-19.

He said that the number of taxpayers should be at least four crore in the country considering its economic progress.

According to the NBR, in addition to seven divisional headquarters, the fair will also begin at six districts —Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Gazipur, Madaripur, Cumilla and Bogura — and three upazilas — Chauddagram (Cumilla), Madhabdi and Raipura (Narsingdi) — in the first day of the weeklong fair.

The NBR will also hand over the income tax cards, crests and certificates to the highest individual and corporate taxpayers at the national level for last fiscal year at a programme to be held at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden in Dhaka on Thursday evening while city corporation and district level taxpayers will be honoured at programmes to be arranged at divisional headquarters.
