Grand Master Niaz Murshed emerged champion in the Saif Powertec 45th National Chess Championship 2019 after beatin Manon Reja Neer in the 10th and last round at the Institute of Engineers of Bangladesh in the capital on Monday.
The 53-year-old Niaz bagged his sixth national chess title after a seven-year gap by earning eight points.
‘I won my last title in 2012. This was the first time that countries all five Grand Masters took part. So, it was the most competitive national chess event I’ve ever taken part. I’m really happy,’ said South Asia’s first GM.
Another GM Abdullah Al Rakib finished runners-up with seven points while IM Fahad Rahman finished third with identical points after tie-breaker.
GM Reefat Bin Sattar and Ziaur Rahman finished fourth and sixth with 6.5 and 6 points respectively while GM Enamul Hossain Razib finished eighth with six-points after tie-breaker.
