Elderly woman killed over land dispute

An elderly woman was killed and at least nine others injured at Sonatala in Bogura on Sunday noon allegedly after a rival group launched an attack at her house.

The deceased was identified as Safura Bewa, 65, mother of Bangladesh Jatiya Sramik League district joint convener Shahidul Islam who was also injured during the incident.

Sonatala officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Masud Chowdhury said police held three suspects for interrogation. 

Locals mentioned there had been a longstanding conflict between Shahidul Islam and Abdul Halim over a piece of land.

While undergoing treatment, Shahidul said, ‘I have been living in this house I built after buying the land. Abdul’s men suddenly attacked my family members and killed my mother as he wanted to grab the land.’

Shahidul’s wife Tahmina, Dudu Mia’s son Mafil, Minhaj Sarkar’s son Rashid Sarkar and wife Rowshan Ara, Kashem Mondol’s son Jahidul Islam, late Samad’s son Shamsul Alam, Tuku Mondol’s son Erfan, Helal’s wife Rebeka Begum were among the injured.
