Bangladesh Railway has rejected a request of Bangladesh Krishak League’s Chattogram (north) district unit for providing its activists 380 train tickets free of cost to join their national conference to be held in Dhaka on November 6.

Railway authorities turned down the request as there was no provision for issuing free tickets against anyone but war-injured freedom fighters and railways staff members, said officials.

Bangladesh Railway’s general manager (east zone) Nasir Uddin Ahmed told New Age on Saturday they had informed the organisation that there was no system for giving free train tickets and now they want to purchase the tickets.

Bangladesh Krishak League wound hold its national conference at Suhrawardy Udyan and Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in two sessions on November 6.

Krishak League Chattogram (north) district president Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and general secretary Shafiqul Islam in a letter to railway’s chief commercial manager (east zone) demanded 190 shovon chair tickets on on Turna Nishitha Express for travelling to Dhaka from Chattogram on November 5 and 190 free return tickets for travelling to Chattogram from Dhaka on November 6.

The fair for 380 shovon tickets stands Tk 1,34,550, said railway officials.

Railway on October 23 in a letter informed the organisation that they would not provide tickets with free of cost.

Nazrul Islam Chowdhury told New Age on Saturday that they did not know that railway did not provide tickets free of costs.

The organisation’s Chattogram (north) unit joint-secretary Faizul Islam claimed they requested for free tickets as a railways officer had informed them it was possible to get free tickets through submitting application and requesting the railways minister.

After the railway authorities rejected the request, they sent another application to purchase 300 tickets, he said.

‘As most of our activists are farmers they don’t afford money to attend the conference and that is why we made the request,’ he added.

Turna Nishitha express runs with 15 compartments including two air-conditioned berth, one non-AC berth, four AC-chair, eight shovon chair compartments and a power car.

Price of every shovon chair ticket is Tk 345.
