BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was hurt as he fell down from a truck during electioneering in favour of the party candidate in Rangpur 3 by-polls on Monday afternoon.
BNP leaders and activists immediately took him to a local private hospital from where he left for Dhaka after taking first aid.
BNP Rangpur unit senior vice president Samsuzzaman Samu said that Fakhrul was campaigning in favour of party candidate Rita Rahman on a pick-up van near the party office at Grand Hotel intersection of the city on Monday afternoon.
As a boy suddenly appeared before the slow-running vehicle, the driver had to hit the brake to bring the vehicle to a halt. The resultant jerk caught Mirza Fakhrul off guard and he fell off the vehicle and sustained injury in his left hand, Samu said.
He received first aid treatment at Prime Medical College Hospital and left for Dhaka in the evening.
The by-election to the Rangpur 3 seat which fell vacant following the death of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad will be held on October 5.
Rita Rahman, daughter of BNP founder member Moshiur Rahman Jadu Mia, is contesting the by-polls as the candidate of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’.
