Two Bangladeshi mountaineers are scheduled to climb 7,000-metre Himlung mountain in Nepal next month.
MA Mohit and Ikramul Hasan will leave Dhaka for Nepal on September 30 and start scaling the mountain near Nepal-Tibet border within October. Mohit, the expedition leader, is the only Bangladeshi to have scaled Mount Everest twice.
Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club made the announcement at a press conference and flag-off ceremony at the National Press Club on Friday.
BRAC chairperson Hossain Zillur Rahman, and Charge D’affaires of Nepal embassy in Dhaka Dhan Bahadur Oli took part in the event.
The guests handed over Bangladesh’s national flag to the mountaineers, who will join a 10-member multinational mountaineering team in Nepal.
Rahman said such expedition is an excellent way to create awareness about conserving nature.
‘When the Amazon is burning and natural disasters are taking place due to climate change, expedition like this symbolises coexistence of mankind and the nature,’ he said.
He hoped the Bangladeshi climbers will put the national flag atop Himlung and return home safely.
Dhan Bahadur Oli said the expedition will help create awareness about the responsibility of mankind to nature.
BMTC founder Enam Ul Haque said Ispahani Tea Limited and Arla Foods Bangladesh Limited will sponsor the Himlung expedition.
