6 schoolgirls saved from child marriage

Parents of at least six schoolgirls were deterred from marrying off their teenaged girls in Lalmonirhat from Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning.

An upazila administration mobile court stopped the marriage of Class VIII student Sarmin Khatun, 15, of Saptana area in Lalmonirhat town on Monday afternoon.

The court also stopped marriages of Class VII student Mitu Begum, 15, at village Mohendranagar; Asma Khatun, 14, at village Barabari; Shila Roy, 13, at village Mogulhat; Bely Khatun, 14, at Nayarhat; and Amina Khatun, 16, at village Kulaghat.

The mobile court fined the guardians a total of Tk 1.6 lakh and took undertakings from them that they would not marry off their children until they reach the marriageable age, said Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Joysree Roy.
